What is the Feldenkrais Method®?
Take your first step towards moving better! Below are descriptions of Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration®. Sign up for either through the Schedule page.
Awareness Through Movement® lessons use slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful effects in terms of strength, flexibility, and holistic integration of body and mind. The impossible becomes possible, then easy, and finally aesthetically pleasing. We think of better movement rather than right. We start with the constituents of the movement and shift attention to the means of achieving instead of the urge to succeed. We don't concentrate. We become aware of ourselves in action. We learn to learn. Jody currently teaches ATM® group lessons at Kundalini Yoga in Durham.
In Functional Integration®, a personalized, hands-on lesson in the Feldenkrais Method®, gentle, non-invasive touch guides your movements and helps your nervous system release habitual tension so you can discover easier, more efficient ways to move, reduce pain, and improve overall physical function. FI® treats you as a whole system rather than focusing on a sore muscle or joint. This process stimulates neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to create new, healthy movement patterns—by communicating directly with how you organize and experience your body. The person senses his most primitive, consciously forgotten patterns and recalls the well-being of a growing young child. Jody offers one-on-one FI® sessions upon request.
The steppe eagle is a large, majestic raptor. Jody spotted one in Kazakhstan and it continues to inspire her with its beauty and strength.
